One day in spring – the most beautiful of all seasons – Smee and Dim Dschazifa were out collecting fresh moss for the little fairy’s bed.

The old moss had become dry and scratchy over the winter and Smee no longer slept very well on it.
So she was all the more looking forward to a fresh, green, soft mattress! And the more fun she had looking here and there for the very best moss.

It was greening and blooming everywhere, bumblebees were buzzing, birds were chirping and even Dim had a little song on her lips!

But wait, what was that?

There on the old tree stump was an egg! Green and purple and gold and quite unusual to look at.
Smee had never seen an egg like this before and she immediately showed it to her friend. But even the tall Dim Dschazifa didn’t know what the egg was all about.

The only thing she was sure of was that it must have come from a nest somewhere. “We’ll put it carefully in the pannier that’s actually meant for your moss,” she said thoughtfully, ”and see if we can find the nest it must belong to.”

With that said, they carefully placed the egg in the basket and continued on their way, looking upwards into the treetops.

But what a surprise: they hadn’t gone far when they discovered another egg of the same kind in the grass!

How could this have happened? Had a predator been at work?
Smee and Dim packed this egg into the pannier, too.

The moss was now forgotten while the big one looked into the trees and the little one looked down to the ground to see if there were any more eggs.

And sure enough! They discovered a third egg in a bright yellow giant tulip!

Somewhere a mom would be very worried, as three lost or stolen eggs could very well mean that the whole nest was empty (plundered).

Fortunately, at least none of the eggs were damaged! And if they brought them back quickly enough, the eggs would hopefully be nice and warm again very soon.

Dim and Smee searched here and there and everywhere and -LOOK!- finally Dim discovered a nest in a blossoming apple tree that seemed to match the size of the eggs.

As they slowly ventured closer, no one seemed to be around. Everything looked deserted and the little fairy suspected that the mummy might well be looking for her unhatched children…and might well be angry if she caught them at the nest, as she might mistake them for the egg robbers.

So the two of them cautiously crept closer and looked into the middle of the straw netting. And sure enough: it was empty!

So one egg after another was laid back with gentle hands before the human woman and the fairy girl hid behind the nearest branches to wait and see.

But nothing happened for a while and at some point Smee’s feet began to fall asleep.
But then, finally, the sound of wings could be heard approaching in the air.

They bent down even lower under the branches, but still so that they had a good view of everything!

And then the mama returned!

There she was: a tree dragon!

My goodness, they hadn’t expected THAT! How good that they had hidden! Even from here, Smee could see the sharp teeth flashing!

But when the dragoness sat down on a branch above the nest and discovered the eggs she had brought back, her joy was probably the same as that of every mother in the whole world! Whether dragon, human, fairy or whatever creature!

And Dim and Smee rejoiced with her and that they had been able to help bring everything to a happy ending.

Carefully they crept away, delighted to see the little family reunited and puzzling over what (or who) could have caused the eggs to be scattered everywhere, when they saw something gold sparkling in the grass.

They stepped closer and discovered…an egg! Smooth and made entirely of gold.

To whom it might belong to…?
