Here in Germany November 1th is All Saints’ Day. In catholic regions it is celebrated as a holiday to remember the loved ones who have already passed away.
As mentioned in my Halloween post last year, that’s when the cemeteries become seas of lights that are beautiful to look at. Especially in the dark, the atmosphere there is beautiful and peaceful.
Time to celebrate
Junikohl has a very different relationship to those days, as some of her ancestors are from Mexico. There on November 1st and 2nd the Days of the Dead are celebrated.
Very similar to the All Saints’ Day, the dead who were once part of one’s life are commemorated there.
If it is a very serious holiday here, the Dias de los Muertos are much more upbeat. And so Junikohl often invites us to dinner, tells us mostl funny tales about her grandparents and great-grandparents, while we enthusiastically admire the small altar that she lovingly sets up every year for her ancestors and that she decorates with flowers and sugar skulls – the Calaveras.
I think this is a wonderful way to face the topic of death.
